Server sweet spot

I'm getting ready to purchase a few more servers and I'm having a hard time finding a good cost/performance/density ratio in a server. (for OpenVZ VPS)

I've been running EOL Sun x4440 class servers. They have a good balance of 16 cores, 32gb ram and 8 drives and good pricing.

Most servers from HP, Dell et al, lack in drive space for the cpu core density they can support.

What manufacturers and models fit the elusive sweet spot?
What are other VPS providers using?

Thanks for your time and advice.

Are you wanting something more current or older equipment?

If something more current then take a look at Intel E3 Series servers as they seem to be a very nice price for the performance they provide. We have been using the E3-1270's for the past year and they have been great. They benchmark faster than a dual 55xx series server. Only limitation is a maximum of 32GB of memory per server.
