Hello everyone. New to the site and i hope Im writing this in the correct topic. I have a website and we were on a shared host server. Recently they had to suspend the site because we are exceeding our CPU/Memory usage. We have to upgrade to a Dedicated Server. They have a Virtual Dedicated Server with 1gb of dedicated ram, 4gb of Burstable ram, 100 gb of Raid 10 hd space and 1000gb of bandwidth. We currently have around 6200 users and the site is mainly used for video upload and watching. The videos are usually only a few mbs. Do you think that VDS can handle what we are doing or will it be too slow? Thanks again for any feedback.
Hi, Generally, when customers are suspended from shared hosting they are simply using too much resources for shared and usually a VPS (VDS). On a VPS if you know what you are doing you might be able to get the site to function better because you can tweak and tune Apache and MySQL for just your site which isn't possible on a shared server. All in all your probably better off going with a dedicated server as if your numbers are growing you would exceed what the VPS can handle in a few months (if you are not already). I would recommend you go with a dedicated server and find a good system administrator do go in and optimize the server configuration for your application. (This will probably cost you about three hours work at ~$75/h)
You need to go for a mid or high-range VPS for a video streaming site.. Make sure you have at least 1gb of guaranteed ram because you need good amount of CPU & ram to do all the vid conversion.. -- joseph
