Whether you buy a VPS or a Dedicated server you are given with the option to choose from a number of distros (operating systems) that come already with basic software packages including Perl, MySql, PHP, Bind, Mail and FTP servers, etc., but you can always install everything else from the shell via command line.

Control panel is often an option and you may choose among Cpanel/WHM or Plesk, two of the most popular CPs but there are many others, including free ones.

I would choose Apache 2.2.3 with CentOS 5 as a distro... in fact my actual server sertting :D

i agree with this, it is better to be safe rather than sorry, especially if you are considering hosting customer sites on it.

Setting a dedicated server correctly can be quiet a task. I personally setup dedicated servers for my customers and make sure everything runs correctly. Every change and addition you make must be verified as something can affect a different part of the server and cause chaos. Be careful on setting it up, as most people recommended, if you have no knowledge at all and you are looking to use it for a production environment, have someone do it for you.

I just purchased a VPS package and even that is confusing for me! Watch out if you don't know what you are doing...
