Server & Server Admin

I have a site for which I have a server & the same company/individual serving as the server admin. I have encountered more downtime then I can stomach (sites currently down) and afford. I'm looking for an economic solution and someone who knows what they are doing.

Is it unreasonable to expect ZERO downtime?

I don't have the time to learn to administer a server myself so I am looking for a reliable server/server company as well as a company/individual who will administer it and make sure things don't go wrong and if they do they are fixed extremely quick.

I am on a lower budget, but I dont think it's unreasonable to pay for something and not have it work properly.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Well, there could be problem at your host or data center end, your remote tech person cant do anything to bring your server up after it goes offline, however if your host claims that there is no such problem noticed in their DC than definitely its yours aka your tech persons responsibility to detect reason and find solution for it. You could hire any server management company around, you can search on google with keyword cheap server management and talk to their sales person to get quotation.

Thanks I will take a look. Do you have any recommendations? Would it be wrong to get a server at GoDaddy & have some administer it?

I dont know about Godaddy dedicated servers, however I believe that you should buy managed dedicated server where you server will be completely managed by your hosting company in order to avoid problem that your currently facing..

    Thanks

Is it the datacenter that is causing the server to be unavailable, or is the server itself having issues? There are many third parties out there that I am sure would be willing to take a look at your server and make recommendations. Is this a Linux or a Windows server? What are you being told the downtime is related to?

I have a person/company who charges me for the server and the charges me to administer it. I don't want anything to do with it nor do I have the time for it. I'll shoot you a PM.

I would suggest changing your admin first. If that doesn't solve the problem than it's a problem with your host. Move to another

Expecting zero downtime is a bit too much IMO.

If you have multiple servers in multiple locations - Then you can have an expectancy of no downtime.

In this case can use a Geo clustering system like Cloud computing :)
high reducing the downtime and perform connections using the server most near to the client to serve request. but this is really not cheap!

In short. Yes. Look at Google & Amazon. They spend literally billions of dollars a year on their setups, and they still have down time. You will hear of "Five Nines" or 99.999% uptime which is about 5 minutes of down time a year. Even still, there is down time involved.

Even still, I pay $20 a month for a Virtual Private Server and have gotten on average no more than an hour of down time every 3 months. That is just fine in my book.
