Server questions

I am looking to invest in a server or two, and would like to spend around $1,000 for my first server.

My question is, how much money could I make from reselling the entire server to someone else each month? What kind of upkeep would it need? And I would need a T1 connection to support it, correct?

Any other information would be nice too. Thanks in advance.

You're not going to like my comments. Most "dedicated servers" are cheap single hard drive pieces of junk.

If I was buying an actual server for serious use, I would do the following:
    - Buy HP (HP server support kicks ass)
    - Make sure you get a warranty
    - Make sure it has RAID 5 (at least)
    - If you really want to geek out, get a hot spare
    - Install Linux
    - Install the hardware monitoring software that HP provides
    - Make sure the alerts go somewhere

    As for up keep:
    - Keep the OS patched
    - Monitor hardware and replace as needed

If you're hosting it yourself a T1 is a good choice. Renting space in a colo is another choice.

A quality server is going to cost more than $1000.

I spend more than $1000 on my PC. :) (hardware only)

Better get it from a reputed server seller.

A quality server will be around $3k if you're in need of a good hardware stable server

    Somewhere, I saw this:

Quad Intel Xeon xxxx Clovertown Processor(Total 16 cores)
    16 GB RAM
    4 x 500 GB HDD
    1 U or 4 U chassis(dont remember)
    $2800

But I guess 8 cores would be enough

    GO with Intel Xeon 5310

What would be the best application to get the most money out of an owned server and a fast connection?

Thanks for the replies, very helpful.

A question like your last one would suggest you probably don't need a server. If you're simply looking to make money there are probably better ways.

A well run dedicated server will require support to handle the technical problems you will inevitably have. If you don't have the skills to take care of that yourself, you'll want to hire someone. There's nothing worse than having clients scream at you because of a problem and not having anyone able to fix it.

If you have the technical expertise and means to buy the monster server as someone posted above, then you could colocate it at a DC, make VPSs on the box and sell them. ;)

If you want to make it shared server.

Install cPanel, and at least 100 mbit port(1 gbps+ recommended)

Sell then and you'll make good money:)

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I am taking networking this fall semester at a college, so asking these questions doesn't necessarily mean I won't be interested in the field.

Everyone has to ask these questions at some point.

Again, thanks. I think I will go the shared hosting route- seems the most profitable.

You can also rent dedicated servers, that's a chaper option rather than shelling out money upfront for a high end server. And high end would cost you upwards of $3000.

If you plan on reselling hosting, it's better to start with a reseller account than to jump into full blown server management.
