Server Question

Just a quick question: Would a unmetered 48gb ram dedicated server be enough for a 2d mmorpg game with 100 people online at all times. Just need to check. Also, with firewall and some extra options, is $800/month a good price for a server like this? Thanks.

It depends heavily on the performance of your applications... normally 8GB should be enough for 100 online users.
I'd suggest you have a benchmark first, a 48GB ram dedi server is far more costy than a 8gb ram dedi server.

i think 48gb ram is too much for only 100 users

I think the RAM is overkill. I've had more intensive servers (thousands of concurrent connections) run ok on 8GB.
    What about the CPU?

I would be more concerned about the bandwidth though - no point in having all that power on a dial up :).
That would be your bottle neck.

48GB of ram is rare for dedicated server, are you sure need that much RAM ? i think 100 user enough with 8GB or 12GB of RAM.

Start with around 4GB and then upgrade if there's a need. You wouldn't want to pay for something that you'll never use do you?

i'd try to get a 64 gb ram for $800

if you could tell more about the fireewall and options maybe i could tell if the price is right

Thats way overkill, but since you have not specified the server config (processor) Cant say much. But for sure its an overkill even on dual xeons.

depends on ram (if it's ddr, ddr2 or ddr3), processor, and the bandwith
