[SERVER NEWBIE] DNS help!

    Hi all,

I reckon to everyone this may sounds really dumb...but I know v little about servers etc.

Essentially I have hosted an adult content site on a shared bulk hosting company for about 4 years.

Recently they started doing dedicated servers, updated their terms and conditions...and booted my site right off the shared account without any warning. The first I knew of the error was after 24hours unable to access the site.

Apparently to host adult content I need to upgrade to the dedicated server (around ten times the cost!)

So they removed my site, control panel and ftp access.

Its taken me a week just to get temporary ftp access back.

I have since migrated the site to a new host and they have told me I have to update the DNS records.

And this is where I am stumped.

Can anyone offer me any assistance here on updating DNS records with no control panel or access other than limited ftp?

Many thanks to anyone who can offer assistance.

    Andy

    Where is your domain registered?
It's done through the domain registra, login to where ever you have it registered and change the nameservers to what ever the new ones you were provider with
    Most likely something like ns1.companyname.com // ns2.companyname.com

The hosting company registered the name while I took up the bulk user account. Is there anyway to find out where my domain account is registered?

    (thanks for the fast response!)

Do a whois on the domain name whois.net
if its godaddy or namecheap, register an account and ask your previous host to forward to domain name.
Failing that, contact the previous host and ask him/her to change the nameservers.

Its registered with the host streamline.net - (but it logs me into ukreg and fasthosts - and then kicks me out with an invalid password - the one they sent me in email).

I have sent a support ticket, as they have removed the control panel where I used to be able to do this.

Problem is they have been ignoring my support requests as the site was in breach of their terms.

It's like a viscious and nasty circle...but boy has it taught me a lesson!!!
