Hi I have a heavy traffic glitter graphics website. The server load there stays above 5 the whole day with a scary RED light always on. Server Load 9.88 (1 cpu) Memory Used 31.6 % Swap Used 0.42 % Disk /dev/vzfs (/) 28 % Todays it reached 10.97 .. i have a dedicated IP .. So is it normal or i have to upgrade to somthing to bring the server load level down. Is is possible to buy more CPU for my host as of now its showing only 1 CPU .. and is buying CPU means buying new hosting??
Are you using a dedicated server or are you a customer of a hosting company and using a shared hosting package?
Check which processes are running high CPU usage. I doubt you can add CPU easily for a server. For heavy traffic graphics web site, are you running normal SATA or SAS/SCSI drives? From experience, the I/O tends to be the limiting factor and contribute to high loads for such graphics sites. You may want to get a server management company to optimize your web site to see if it helps, if it doesn't I am afraid you may need to shift to a faster server with SAS/SCSI.
@hosting.network Currently its my blog in my signature(last one - asciizone) .. The main site which is on server is scrapslive.com. i have just stored images on that server. and take images from that server in my asciizone blog.. 2nd as its a graphics site so hundreds of users at the same time requests data from the server from their emails, orkut scraps, myspace , hi5 .. etc.. scrapslive.com is under construction and just testing now with asciizone that this server can sustain the heavy load or not. @bturkay I bought the hosting from reseller Suntex hostings . The actual srever is FDC servers (fdcservers.net) .. data center at US... They have given me a Dedicated IP .. but i dont know its a dedicated server or shared one .. now idea about that. @wisdomtool no processes but the vast number of requests of images from all over the world.. first i was hosting images in photobucket .. then thought of shifting to a proper hosting.. but never knew that it has its own problems.. @inworx I dont know how to get those values/results. -------------------- Finally ... I will wait till my server burns out or i get some mail from my server about hosting issues or about banning my site .. FDC servers says that they can handle such bandwidth with 100MBit port .. lets see.. Can anybody tell me what are VPS and can they help in balancing load on server CPU?
ya i also think so its a shared one .. but my cpanel shows me its a dedicated ip .. even that ip opens up my underconstruction site... for 2gb yearly price is $70...
I'd try dumping the images back to imageshack if I were you. I seriously doubt you're going to lose visitors because of it with that site.
I will test this server for one month .. even i havent uploaded all the images .. just few images and server went RED.. if everything goes right then will continue or will shift back to photobucket pro hosting. i dont know how do sites like zwani.com and other myspace glitter graphics site manages these huge load of images.. i guess they invest lots of money in server and bandwidth.. well thats not possible for me..
I looked around a little but didn't find what I was looking for. Does the site have anything that edits images ? For instance can someone upload an image & have it "glitterified" ? Scripts that edit images on a server can really eat up resources, that's why I ask.
ya u r rite .. those thing eats up lots of resources... i hv a text glitter gen script on the server .. but havnt posted its link on the site..
You are just a shared hosting customer..Shared hosting means sharing a dedicated server with other sites..Also these sites may also share one ip..But if you want you can use a dedicated ip for your site in the same server. So,having a dedicated ip doesnt mean that you have a dedicated server Since you are not the owner of the server there is no need to worry about CPU usage..Shared hosting customers pay just for their disk space and bandwidth usage.. cPanel lets you see the server load at panel but it is just for information..If anything needed it is your hosting provider to make this
you NEED a dedicated server try getting a the lower ends first, with more RAM like say 2 GB and you'll see an increase in performance instantly~ how much traffic are you getting niways??
If there is no problem with his site's performance there is no need to a dedicated server. Just ignore the status messages at cPanel..It may be another site on the server that is causing this issue..Or server's hardware may not be appropriate for the sites in it.. Unless your hosting provider says "We cant go on hosting your account because your site uses so much resource" there is no need to have a dedicated server. I had been using a dedicated server for 2 years..2 months ago i canceled it and purchased a reseller account. Now i am like a flying bird..No need to worry about failures, attacks, problems..etc.. I am just paying the reseller fee and they are taking the care of everything..
RAM is 2GB about traffic i am getting 2000 uniques/ped with 6000+ pageloads.. + request to server also comes from lots of orkut users who hav those images in their scraps.. bturkay u have thrown my tension out of window.. thanks .. now i am goin to upload more pics on this server... now undrstd d diff. between dedicated IP and dedicated server..
I think you are on a vps, right? And also try to login to your ssh and post the output of top -c command. It can be high for three reasons. One either your server is updating your stats as a result cpanellogd is taking high load, or Mysqld is taking high load or apache is taking high load. So for different cases you need to take different steps depends on which case causing you high loads
It's running off a virtuozzo VPS (/vzfs)... I think it can't take your load. Maybe someone gave you a resellershared account on this VPS. Try to isolate the site causing much load and relocate it on a better hosting.
