server help!

    ok my friend has his own server, hosting site where he can give people cpanels, hosting, .com names etc, he wants to teach me tonight, wants me to study and learn tonight about server managing keywords etc so i can take over and manage ppls accounts, add .com, names etc..

    what stuff do i need to know?? please help!!i need to learn hwo to manage his server! he is going to give me a small test tonight

    Read the cPanel docs as you'd mostly be doing things regarding that.

    cPanel has everything graphic. You wont need much information on it.

    Still, for any information, read the cPanel and WHM doc on how to use.

    I would suggest you start reading guides on how to secure the box and run server updates, check logs etcetc

    Server administration is not just a left-lick of the mouse. You need to understand (at least the basics) how ports work, how traffic passes, how to block it, shutdown unnecessary daemons and limit ssh access etc...

    i would suggest a course in unix administration. i would assume that this is a linux/unix server so that would be a great start. maybe buy some crappy old pc and set it up as a firewall on your local network. something to play with at home while you learn. i started off running a 1U rack mount server underneath my bed and administering it.
