Server "CPU Usage" and "Concurrent Connections"... What does this mean?

    Hi all,

I recently noticed my webhost has implemented something which shows up in my cPanel.

Now, what do these things mean? I tried to test it... Opened a few of my pages in different tabs, and hit refresh on my cPanel while they were loading... CPU usage had jumped to 30% and Concurrent connections was 6.

That is sad because even if a dozen people try to open my websites, they won't be able to do so...

How does this concurrent connection work? If there are 20 people accessing my sites at the same time, then what happens to the 21st person? Is he in a queue? Or does he get "Page Not Found" error?

I have been using mon.itor.us service, and it is reporting dozens of failures every week. I asked my webhost and he believes its because of CPU limit.

Need help please... I don't know whats going on...

    Cheers!

You should submit a support ticket to your host, we can answer these questions, but submitting a ticket will learn them that they should inform their clients about updates ;)

I have submitted a ticket and had a few back-and-forth email conversations. But they are not telling me anything I need to know.

I think I might have to shift to a managed VPS server. It will be 10 times more expensive than my current webhost, but I won't have to worry about downtimes.

Have you considered moving to a different shared host instead? I don't know how much resources you're using, but we're hosting pretty high-traffic websites on WiredStorm. (as an example)

Since your support isn't answering the question, here are some forums where they're talking about:
    http://forums.speedysparrow.com/index.php?/topic/100-cpanel-cpu-and-concurrent-connections/
    http://codono.com/server/30935/server-cpu-usage-and-concurrent-connections-what-does-this-mean/

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The CPU usage is just the CPU usage you're using compared to the allowed usage. The concurrent connections should mean something about the amount of visitors on one page -- from what I read. ;)

cpu usage is most likely how much cpu usage and concurrent connections are how many connections you have to the server at once.
