Apparently, this has already been discussed here before in some context as it's somewhat important aspect of searching process. Nevertheless I'm asking about this now as a poll just to get some illustrative statistical results to know if it's worth to be on the third or at least the second page at all.

Yes, you know, I also thought about that, but I think that webmasters' approach to this question is worth knowing for everyone including them themselves as well :)

In some cases I have seen the best results on pages 3-5, so it's not uncommon for me to click randomly on page 4 and work my way to page 6. But quite often I deliberately replace my keyphrase of interest with something related, random and less likely to be commercially competitive, and then I almost always find what I'm looking for on page 1 or 2.

I never go beyond first 3-4 pages. If I dont find the information that I am looking for, I try a different combination of keywords.

A normal user, I think, will go much deeper than try other combinations. (Just an opinion - havent really studied it.)

It's the opinion of your target audience you need, not that of the webmaster. When searching for certain things (tutorials) I'll often search further than the first 20 pages. For other things I lose interest after the first page.

I shall dare to summarize and say that it depends to a great extent on what you are looking for, whether it's connected with professional activity or just what you do at leasure. Besides, a key word is important as well. A versed person can easily operate 'em to get most approriate results.

More often then not I will go as far as page 2 or 3 when looking for something in particular, as I find that anything beyond that becomes increasingly less relevant to what I was searching for in the first place.

I agree. Whenever I search for stuff, I often use quotation marks etc. for an exact phrase search or I might find a site that I think the content might be on and I will use the "site:" command along with a search phrase. Your average internet user will not use (or even know) these command nor will they (usually) use advanced search to use these options.

But still, I think most users probably won't go past the first or second page. I stop at the first (sometimes even glancing at the top 4-5) and if I can't find what I am looking for I just enter a different search phrase.

I would search till I get what I want. Doesnt matter if its the 1st page, 2nd page or 100th page. As long as I dont find the perfect thing, I will go on search. But not just regular searching, search within the results too with related keywords. Usually takes only few minutes to find what I need though.

    Regards,

    Admans,

another Q would be how many results per page do you use?

I have it on 100, and I go rarely to 2nd page ;) but I do search until I'm completely satisfied with my searching results

hands up who has their browser page set at 10 listings only? Can you really find what you want in the top 10?

All this first page of a search engine stuff is a bit meaningless, since I believe most people would have their browser preferences set at 20 or 30 results displayed on a page at a time.

So, being on the first page of Google can mean being in the top 30 SERPs.

Now that makes things a bit different for us all, does it not?

I check as many pages as I need to find the right results. I run 100 results per page. If I find what I need though, I'll stop looking. I usually go through the first 4 or 5 results.

MSN doesnt show results beyond page 25 (10 results per page) . After page 25, all pages are same as Page 25.

Do Google and Yahoo show all results or is there any limit ?

In the past, I used to find what I want in the first page.
But thanks to the daily modified SEO techniques, I always find the first page full of BS, not having my search result at all. So, I have to click some O's until I find something.

It depends. If that is a must i look till the 4th page then change the keywords. If it is not that much important i type it, look for first 3 results onpage keywords then choose one of them. If that doesn't work, i don't make another search

EDIT: BTW Lordo you will miss these days when you will have to click on "E" to find something.. Thank's to SEO MASTER :/

I could not agree more... if I am not seeing anything near what I was looking for on the first 2 or 3 pages, I click a few pages deeper. If there is still no results that seem to be what I want, I will modify the KW phrase to find what I am looking for on the first couple of pages.

Perhaps another question to ask is how much do you modify the kw phrase... adding terms, or trying synonyms... sometimes, searching for a manual or driver on some hardware, the query could mean absolutely nothing to anyone under normal circumstances, and because of re-branding, component purchases, and the like, the serp I click may not even be for the actual brand I have, but with the right query, the info is still relevant... sometimes, the modification comes from what I see in the first search.
