SERPs wipe the floor with Pagerank

    PR and SERPS are both mainly influenced by LINKS.

    For me, the #1 thing is LINKS.

    PR=Good and lots of backlinks. Backlinks=better se placement.
    If a=b and b=c, then a=c :)
    There is a link between PR and search engine ranking, but there is also a link between search engine placement and on page seo, domain age, good content, etc, etc, etc...

    I use PR to gauge how I am doing with my backlinks, thats about it. But you have to remember backlinks and PR are only a part of the formula to place high in the search engines ;)

    I know it's been a while since this thread has been around, however I just wanted to mention that I reckon the statement mohms has made is actually far from the truth.

    PR=Good and lots of backlinks - You can achieve a high PageRank simply with one link from a good website with PageRank that is of the same theme to your website.

    It is also good to note here that your site should contain a nice amount of related content to give it that extra boost and achieve the higher PageRank.
