looks like things are shaking up in my industry as far as search results are concerned. i recently read an article by michael martinez in which he talked about his theory that google is currently dumping tons of pages from their index. he's not the only one who's talking about it either. anyway, i wasn't seeing any changes within my industry until now. one of our competitors that was sitting at #4, is now dominating the top spot over two very well established companies.

there has also been a complete "disappearing act" performed by another one of our competitors, who is no where to be found. they don't even rank for their own company name. this concerns me a bit...

why is it that google has completely wiped out this company from their index? could it be that they were involved in spammy type techniques? if so, do i need to stay away from any backlinks that they established?

Sometimes websites just go away for a while for no apparent reason (like mine did a couple times) but then comes back a week or two later. I will never understand google bot.

Since it's not your site, but your competitor's, why don't you tell us about it along with the search terms and we can collectively look under the hood and see if a consensus develops?

(BTW, links from DP can be pretty strong, so I wouldn't post the full URL)

SERPs are jumping up and down all the time, there's nothing you can do about this but like I have said before, it's only when your site gets filtered out of the search results in Google, that you realise not to put all eggs in one basket.

Google has been "dumping" then re-adding a lot of websites recently. I do think a major algo update is going on.

Still indexed, but have lost position. Was no. 4. Now nowhere to be found. This happened for me in July.. I'm hoping (as in July) it will be back in the top 4 within 3-4 days. I'm loosing over 100.00 a day while waiting for this site to get back to the top. I'm reluctant about updating the content, as it was working fine before.

Probably due to violating Googles Guidelines.

A great lesson to be learned here.

    Live by Google.....Die by Google

Never build your business on a search engines whims or you'll soon be Chapter 13!

I would never hesitate at updating content. Updated content always ranks better.

If you go around, there are a lot of people saying they are dropping SERP or ranking. It is most likely be a google flu. Should be back to normal in a week.

Relying on Google for business is risky business. You will need alternative traffic sources or another site in a different vertical.

Google is on a spam mission and they are contantly playing with the algorithim to catch violators of their guidelines.

In addition to catching violators, there is some collateral damage. This is where some tanked sites come back as they tweak the algo.
