I rank say 4th on google for a keyword And I jave got many high quality backlinks. THe 3 websites above me do not have that many quality links . Now how do I beat them to reach on the top. I have got a lot more and many quality backlinks than they have got...
Maybe they have an older domain. Or maybe they have links from more websites. You can have 10 sitewide links with 100 links on each site = 1000 links They can have 500 single links on 500 different sites = 500 links Their links > your links
Try to copy some of their links if possible. Just work at getting more quality links and add more quality content to your site. In time you should pass those sites.

Theres no "update to come round". The serps update daily/hourly, the only thing that updates on a set timescale really is toolbar pagerank.

Backlinks is not the sole factor that determine your SERP. There are other criteria which google will take into consideration some of it like, keyword usage, on-page SEO, amount of content...
May be they have done good onpage optimization.Check their keyword density no.of outbound links and domain age.May be one factor be that their domain names matches the keyword.
