Hi, I have a basic question about SERP ranking and google. Does anyone know of a good way to estimate the % of people who click a result based on its ranking? For instance, if my keyword has 1 million monthly searches, what % of those people click the #1 ranked result vs #2 vs #3 etc. I read somewhere that like 80% of people clicked the top result - can anyone provide me with a link to a good reference?
in my own experience, if you are #1 for a search term, you get around 40% of monthly exact search. now i realize people say you can get 80% or whatever, but there are few things to consider. the search volume google shows on adwords keyword tool, that is not just the search volume for google.com itself, it is the combined search volume of google AND its search partners. what % of searches are done on google and what % of searches are done on google partner sites are beyond anyone's guess as each niche and each search term is different. but the fact is, the search volume shown on the keyword tool is not only for google.com searches. another thing you have to consider that not all sites or search results will appeal to everyone. for your given term, some visitors will find the fisrt result more appealing and related while others might think the 2nd result would be something they are looking for. aside from that, there are sponsored results which will take up 3 top positions. to make things worse, not all the datacenters will show the same result across the country. so considering all the above, and from my own experience, i say you can expect about 40% of exact seach volume if you rank #1 for a term
In my experience #1 gets about 55%, #2 gets 25%, #3 gets 15% give or take on all those numbers with #4-9 getting 1% each and #10 getting about 2%. I know those don't add up perfectly, but I think you get the idea.
These are a great guideline but other factors can vary the click through: #1 = 42% #2 = 12% #3 = 8.5% #4 = 6% #5 = 5% #6 = 4% #7 = 3.4% #8 = 3% #9 = 2.8% #10 = 3%
Are those from Adwords? How do you go about getting ads in those positions, as opposed to the sidebar ads?
Those are the highest bidders of that keyword term. I always click the first result so these numbers dont surprise me.
