SERP position goes up/down every couple days/hours

    Hey guys,

Josh here - new to the forums!

Got a quick question. I'm doing SEO for a specific term. 99% of the time it's top of 2nd page (around position 13) but I've noticed at random hours and random days I will be on the first page around position 7-9. I'm at this position for maybe an hour or so, then I'm back to page two.

This is NOT a new site, domain is 8 years old and I've been doing SEO work on it for 6 months. We were on page 8 when I had started.

Does anybody know what may cause this and what this may mean?

No clue.. Never heard of any such fluctuation.
May be some more 'strong' backlinks will make the rank better and steady.

Yeah, I'm working on it! Easier said than done, right? :p

But it's weird, we're steady on page 2, but 1-3 times a week for an hour we're on page 1. And I'm logged out, with out customized search enabled. Nobody has been able to give me a real answer, and it kills me not to know what is going on.

I'm hoping nothing bad since we're going UP and back down, rather than DOWN and back up. Ya know?

Just watch the results total number when you are in page 1 and you back to page 2, if the number is getting changed, then just don't worry
This happens to me when I change IP address to check results in different countries

This is a very common occurrence. In all likelihood, you are hitting different datacenters. G has roughly 50+ DCs in the US alone. When you search, you connect to one of them. They are rarely all in sync.

Most likely one (or more) DCs has updated information on your site and scores it in the #7 or #8 spot. The other DCs probably do not have the updated info yet. So, sometimes you hit one set of results, and other times another set.

There are a number of tools out there that let you compare SERPs across DCS if you feel the need to check further. Bottom line, it should not be long before you have a new place on page 1, consistently.

This actually might be nothing to do with you but one of your competitors above you.

What is your own definition of "quality"? Most of stabilized ranking in Google needs attention about quality of backlinks you acquired. The lower quality = the lower chance to maintain your ranking.

I do not think anyone could give you an exact answer, including me but only experiences and assumption would go.
