    The common:
    1.Before rank well, even on top.
    2.Heavily drop.usually to bottom of serp, even disappear.
    3.Happen in one day, or in an hour. maybe in a minute you are not notice that.
    4.Come back without extra effort.
    5.Usually happen in google big update.


    The different:
    1.some come back in a few of day,some in weeks, some in 2 month,some never.
    2.some come back and continue to go to a high position, some go to where it was, seldomly go to bad position.


    The reason:
    1. google tech problem
    2. penalty. mainly bez of link trade.
    3. you will go to a high position, and google first send you to bottom to torture you and surprise you with a top ranking.Yes, kidding. what the hell the reason.
    Not the reason
    I found most of answer for reason for drop is your competitor let your down.that is true for common.But your competitor will not send you to bottom of serp, even let you disappear in a day or a hours.
    What to do
    Give your information about it,maybe we can find the true reason with massive data.

    I think the google algo does this on purpose to throw you off. make it confuisng. So people can't game the system.
    It also could be to do with the Datacenters. Some DC's might have different serps and say 1 DC goes down (offline) so you get serps from another one and it has different results

    p.s My site just got dropped today again. and I have like no traffic today.

    Walk outside and look at all the business running with the same traffic as usual.
    Ask yourself why is it, the business offline is making money, & your not??

    Now my site has returned right back where it was again. All pages high ranks pages are back and everything.. Serously why does google do this?
    I drop about 100 backlinks yesterday. Hoping google would bring the site, I always feel parnoid if I broke some rule etc..
