Good post, I've a question, did you listen about that you can have a penalty if you match the exact keyword in the title tag, url name and h1? I was using long tail and I was getting serp drops everytime in Google...

Hope the above is not true:(

I have a few questions about your long tail link building:

    1. Do you alter your anchor texts or always keep them the same as the "long tail keyword"
    2. Do you get high quality DOFOLLOW links for you new pages, or do you save there types of links for your home page?

No i've never experienced this. It's normal for a webmaster to have a page Title the same as the page Heading. It's also normal for other webmasters to use the same anchor text as the page's Heading or Title when linking to a document.

    1. I rarely try to target the anchor to the long tail, instead i prefer to make it more specific because long-tail terms are so easy to rank for they come up in the SERP's anyway. For instance linking to a page with just "Kodak Cameras" as an anchor can bring up terms like "Kodak MPV-1000 Camera" if that exact term is on the page.

    2. However is best at the time, if someone offers me a link on a Canon page i would rather point it at my existing Canon category instead of my new Kodak page.

I just wanted to chime in on this thread and tell sweetfunny Thank You! The funny part is 95% of you aren't even going to use this info as it takes up a WHOLE lot of time and it's the most boring thing to do ever! While the other 5% of you will reap the rewards, like me. Anyone else that put this info to work please chime back in and post your results. Mine are Amazing!!!

I only fed the googlebot 1000 pages. It was actually 1300 or so but 300 got deindexed because of a FREE tool (I won't say which). Go and pay monthly for a tool. You'll make your money back very quickly;-). Check the stats:

Please don't ask me which tool I went with, what normal seo tags I used for each page, or anything. I won't get into specifics because I HATE competition. I have fierce competion for every longtail term I seo'd. However, I still land top 10 for 90% of my keywords and 10% fall into the top 11-20.

If anybody has any ideas on any programs that will create pages more quickly and all I have to do is input the keywords then let me know. I must be able to edit the page style to match my own pages, as well. (Seems as if my competion already has a hold of one.)

I do have 1500 other pages that haven't been indexed yet(That's double of what I have indexed now). So traffic should double quite soon.

I've also tried this on a newer domain thats 2 weeks old. Traffic is on the rise everyday as well.

    Sorry for double posting.

Well I'm still waiting for the results. I already had thousands of pages of content, and I even have good links (even new ones) pointing to main subcategories pages, but google is taking its merry time indexing and crawling deep into the pages...I'm betting the googlebot might wait to the end of the month to crawl deep into the site..

Just in case this works.. Hey brag, if my niche is not yours, feel free to PM me the tool.;):D

Well no comment on the technicalities of creating pages or how to optimize but I certainly agree with the basic what sweetfunny want to share: that long tail terms are much more valuable to a webmaster who are optimizing sites for keywords because long tail terms are much more accessible, and they generally bring in more qualified traffic. THAT'S A FACT..and I want to thank him for this good frank exchange here.

@brag - You are too slow buddy.. :)
I dont like boasting, but since you started it...
    Look at mine. :D :-
The variations in my keywords are SOO many, that many phrases show 0% in awstats, probably becuase it cannot calculate 1/31396 :)

Although, I agree, that my site is not new like yours. This is the result of sheer hard work and dedication.
My stats from other sites are much more amazing, but, most are client sites, and hence cannot reveal.

@windtalker - Submit your sitemap to google.(People have their opinions about doing this though) Google indexes my pages 20minutes after I make them.

@kgrad - nice, the stats I posted are for a 7 month old site with pr0 but a bit over 1000 backlinks that I got in DEC, some inner pages have pr3 and 4 though, I'm really waiting on a pr update for the main page. Just started 3 weeks ago doing the longtail. I still have hundreds of pages that I made before discovering this thread, that need to be optimized. I really have no motivation though because my keyword tool tells me the keywords do not get searched at all.

The 2 week old site I only made 800 pages for it and only 200 backlinks. Google indexed ALL the pages though. The graph on this one is looking quite pretty.

I can only make on average 2-3 pages per minute, but I do take LONG breaks in between then I hit it hard again, haha.

Let me knw what software you're using to create the pages ...;)

(I've stopped focusing on backlinks and just make pages. Common sense: The pages are bringing in the traffic.)

1 day or 1 month or what?

I get 30,000 visits from 3,000 keywords, so I guess my keywords are not really long tail.

3 weeks, actually 2 weeks , because I took a week break and worked on another site in a different niche. I just started again 4 days ago, I've made double the amount of pages that I already have indexed, in 4 days ... just waiting on google to index them so traffic might double soon.

I'm going to hit it hard this weekend as well.

No problems at all, and your stats are looking great. It's good to see people putting it in to practice and cashing in on the rewards.

I agree, it's boring and hardly the sort of work most people associate with the term "SEO" they only see the glamor of big rankings and rolling in the money... But it's this exact kind of stuff involving keywords and page production that's at the core of optimization work.

Nows a good time to setup for long tail, the reason... Approximately 4 weeks before the public Pagerank update Google does a very deep crawl for about 2 weeks, and your pages will definitely be found during this time.

As a rough guestimate, the export will occur early to mid April so the deep indexing should start to happen in the next 2-3 weeks. If you do the math, you will see i commenced my long-tail assault just prior to the deep crawl of the January PR export. ;)

    Great post.

What's funny is that I've been doing long tail for the past few months with much success without actually know that the term "long tail" existed.

I like what you've said here..

I understand all of this, and I thought it would work like this exactly.

But what confuses me is the CONTENT of the page. Can I DUPLICATE my same landing page for my MAIN terms but have duplicate landing pages for each of these long tails?

    For example

If my page ranks for ORGANIC CAT FOOD as the main one, but then I want to rank for ORGANIC SEAFOOD CAT CHOW as a long tail, can I use the ORGANIC CAT FOOD's landing page but change every ORGANIC CAT FOOD to ORGANIC SEAFOOD CAT CHOW? Can I just switch out the keywords or will Google get mad since I am duplicating my own content?

    MWM
