I am not sure I am understanding this...

My problem when I use long tails is my ads in adwords get cancelled because they are not searched. So how do I keep those terms active and....

Any software programs that recommend long tail key phrases?

    Thanks

I think this is pretty elementary knowledge for some one who's been into REAL "internet marketing"

Long Tails are the basics of keywords research and niche discovery.

I'd say the trick lies in locating primary, secondary and tertiary keysets.

Good start though because lots of people still under-estimate the power of long tails.

    Sweetfunny, keep it kicking!

I am new to this. I've been here a couple of weeks. I had no idea about longtails until I read this post. I followed Sweet's advice on one page to test it, and it really works. I had no idea how powerful this is. Thanks Sweet!

This is some excellent info, do you know of any good tools to obtain relative long tailed keywords for our businesses? I thought about the google adwords tool but was not sure if it would work well for long tail keywords. Your thoughts?

The primary, secondary and tertiary keysets can be more like primary niches, secondary and tertiary niches.

Its about categorizing keysets based on the one's which need to be given primary importance followed by ones which can also be included under the keyset table.

It can also be categorized based on "value" and "attainability"

The best keyword niche tools i use are:

    1, Wordtracker
2, Keyword Discovery - Great for analyzing UK traffic.
    3, Overture
    4, Adwords External Keyword Tool
5, Google Trends ( Not exactly a keyword tool, but good for determining keywords trends )

Do you not like Keyword Discovery? KD is my favorite, although I have only used the free versions of the tools you mentioned.

It has been an interesting read, but not for the information which I guess most of us knew, but for the results you achieved. Experiments are far more important than just articles with informations. That is why I like your article and that is why others like your article IMHO.

    Kind regards

We have also been writing articles with long tails terms. Because of constant researches, we understand what our target audience may be looking for and how they might type in Google or Yahoo! Great article and nice attracting title.

That is a very nice achievement, but a few quick questions come to mind:
    - How did you update/improve all those thousands of pages since they they were not SEO'd? Did you use any automated tool, any script, hired someone...?
    - Did you buy that site from someone or, let's say, bought AdSense-ready template articles on eBay and created a site with them?

    Congrats anyway.

It's been mentioned a couple of times in this thread, but as there are still people asking about longtail keyword tools, I'll give another "thumbs up" to hittail http://www.hittail.com/
If you already have any search traffic at all, it'll highlight the longtails that can already be found on your website, which will give you ideas for things that can be emphasised

    Sweetfunny,

Great read! I think long tail keywords are becoming more and more important as the competitive keywords tend to take too long to outrank the current competition. With that said, I would always suggest that an SEO focus a percentage of its attention on ranking for the most competitive keywords, but also equate into the strategy of ranking long tail keywords, because a diverse ranking strategy will reap greater rewards in the long run and as you said by having a diverse ranking strategy your site traffic will not be greatly affected by SERP updates and changes.

    Excellent read, thanks for sharing!

Great post but I must say branding will bring you more at the end of the day. I did some seo for a 100+ million dollar company. The SEO brought in millions more but the branding brings in way much more. It's important to think of your company as a brand in the long term.

Vendors are starting to get more stringent on pure play e-commerce companies carrying their products. In the example you mention the Canon camera. In the big picture Canon will have a retail site and if done right will dominate for the long tailed and branded terms.

Just think about it. You want build a client base on people looking for your company becuase you bring something unique to the market.

I didn't even see this thread when I posted yesterday.

It appears that it really works

I started a thread yesterday when I got page 1 ranking for serp with a long tail keyword. Post link follows:

ranked in less than 30 minutes for serp

Too long to get into but I am basically a rooky ans I posted my steps I took and the tools I used.

My site which is actually a free blog is still holding on.

Thanks for sharing sweetfunny I gained a lot of insight on the why part and the further optimization part.

And thanks for the hittail link as well!
