    Hello.

Maybe you've heard about Serge Thibodeau and his site RankforSales.com
He writes lots of articles for SE related sites like:
    Site Pro News
    SEO Today
    ISEDB
    Lil Engine
    Business Evolved

Yesterday i have read an article he wrote: "Boosting Visibility Through a News Section". Nice article, so I am going to try this strategy.

Anyway, i went to rankforsales.com. I tried to rightclick to see backlinks. Rightclick is denied by Javascripts and an alert pops up saying " This website is fully protected by international Copyright laws and your IP address has been recorded and save..."

I managed to look at the source, and surprise:

    <!-- search engine optimization -->

    Code (markup):
This comment appears about 5 times in the homepage. In the entire site there is an abusive use of comment, mainly with keywords and keyphrases.

I might be a little paranoic, but since he is an expert, should he do that?

The above text is only my humble opinion.
I am not a SEO expert.

    Regards,
    Razvan

    Razvan -

    >should he do that?

A good question with a simple answer, which is why I am making one of my rare appearances :)

Search on the key phrase he has optimized for 'search engine optimization' and the page is 144th in the SERPs.

There are three kinds of SEO experts.

    1. Those that really are, have one client - themselves, and make a lot of money.

    2. Those that aren't who do it for others and make some money.

    3. Those that can't do either and write telling others how to do it.

    :)

Apparently Google ignores comment tags completely so even if you put thousands in it doesn't help nor hurt.

    >Apparently Google ignores comment tags completely....

Search on a common comment tag snippet like 'webbot BOT' - look at the SERPs - are these sites indexed on a comment tag or is it an illusion?

    >so even if you put thousands in it doesn't help nor hurt.

You are sure about that? ;)

Yes it is an illusion. Al the SERs for webbot bot show pages with VISIBLE text including webbot bot. Other members on this forum have experimented with the comment tag by including unique nonsense words, then searching on it weeks after knowing the page had been indexed and it DIDN'T show up.

So yes, I am sure about those people's findings yet wouldn't bet my life on it because I haven't tested it myself, nor do I (just like anyone else) know the exact google algo. Hence the word 'apparently'....

    >Al the SERs for webbot bot show pages with VISIBLE text including webbot bot.

    This one doesn't www.fts.gsa.gov/infosec/buttons.htm

    and this one doesn't www.webplastics.com/implantfaqs.htm

    and this one www.sc.xinhuanet.com/forum/2004-02/05/content_1564221.htm

    etc. etc. etc.

And my 'sure about that?' was referencing the 'hurt' element of your statement?

The first one does: See the title in the blue bar which IS taken into account by google. The ecaxt same for the second link. And probably the same for the 3d one but encoded into some asian type font. And I guess the same story for all the others where some dynamic title script has missed a quotation thus displaying the meta contents etc. in the title bar.

I doubt it can hurt because the comment tag have a legitimate purpose. They are being ignored by most browsers and by most SERP's so I don't think they would waste resources to check whether a file has abusive amounts of comments in it.

Yes they say don't do it, but they refer IMO to dodgy CSS hiding, hiding by colour, hiding by pixel offset etc.

It's obvious that in the 21st century, no respectable search engine would give weight to comment tags. :D

It's like the keword tag. It has been spammed to death so it is only wise to just ignore it 100% full stop. I only use it for the sake of commenting on code, as it was intended for.

I have seen sites that use something like this:
    <p class="keyword">text</p>

    What do you think?

Does anything between < > get indexed at all? I doubt it.

Sorry when you said 'VISIBLE text' I took it to mean visable when viewing the page in a browser.

    >where some dynamic title script has missed a quotation thus displaying the meta contents etc. in the title bar.

In fact it is simply when it really does appear in the <title></title> although it is often malformed or the first of two.

The snippet in the SERPS does however often contain the search term and surrounding text from the comment tag and can be highlighted with the toobar. This means that Google reads comment text and uses it when forced to (as a result of poor coding) but for indexing purposes ignores it? But for ranking purpose it may be taken into account as as an additional occurence of the search term?

    No.

Michael, you need to look close to those snippets and the page. It only shows those snippets because it is actually in the body, the to the punter visible text of the page. Most of them from tutorials, forum posts etc. That's where the snippet comes from, not from the html.
