    I think the penalty is because of the same anchor text being used for all the backlinks. Such backlinks do not have natural looking profile. That is why it is advisable to change the anchor text for backlinks.

    Well there is a phenomenon going around right now. Many sites have been losing their SERP's. I mean, many established sites that used to get a lot of traffic. This phenomenon started at the beginning of June. My site has also lost a great deal of it's serp's, no sign of improvement so far. Maybe this is the case with seomoz too.
