First of all, if you aren't reading SEOMoz every day you should just give up SEO now because it's really good. After polling over 30 SEO top "analysts" (read: blog authors) SEOMoz has released a pretty good document detailing what they believe are the most positive, controversial, and negative factors that can contribute to SEO success, or lack thereof. What impressed me most is that the article is an actual article and not just a linkbait "top ten" list. I think I'll be referring to this for a long time, not just to influence my own actions but also to convince the signers of cheques that what I'm doing is a good idea. The only thing I'm leary about is that there really isn't any metric for quality in terms of what SEO people they used or not. It's not like success stories and figures are published that regularly, so it ends up being the squeaky wheel gets the notoriety. With that small pinch of salt in mind it's still well worth a read. Check it out: http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors (no affiliation with SEOMoz, am not Rand Fishkin's sock puppet)
That is some really good info. I am new to all of this and you guys all always on top of things for me. Thanks!
We notice that there are several items that are Highly Disputed among the contributors. So among themselves, factors in search ranking vary in many ways.

If you like to play the Google game... This could help you (and others too) ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "This document represents the collective wisdom of 37 leaders in the world of organic search engine optimization... ...The result is a resource of incredible value - although not every one of the estimated 200+ ranking elements are included, it is my opinion that 90-95% of the knowledge required about Google's algorithm is contained below..." It's an oldie but a goodie. The "Disagreement Factor" is what really made this effort uniquely valuable. It showed just how little we (collectively) know.
I didn't know the age, but the content looked pretty interesting. After "Keyword Use in Title Tag" there is not a single issue they agree strongly on Like Will said "It showed just how little we know." (about Google's search engine positioning)
