you should read some books on SEO and apply them on any website and check the results yourself as till u do it u will not know what SEO is ..... juz reading won't help............ be practical

What I would like to say is this: don't do research on your own, especially not before you know right from wrong. There are way too many SEOs that go on practicing their work with very limited self-research and it usually ends up in them providing crap. I would suggest buying the SEObook.com training seminaires, subscribing to SEOmoz and buying a tool such as SEO elite to help you out.
Personally I think reading helps a lot. I think you should read everything you can get your hands on before you start doing any seo. Keep in mind that a lot of what you will read is just theory and may not necessarily be true. You can still learn a lot from their theories though. If you start seo without enough knowledge you could do something wrong that could get you penalized or banned.
Read forums, guides, blogs, etc...then try, try, try...read again...try again...discuss with people. It is a lot of work but worth it
That's actually one of the worst ways to learn SEO. There are 10 or 15 blogs that I'd advise being truly informative, many of the others being full of missinformation. Don't even get me started on SEO forums, where for every concept there are 20 different opinions.
