I mean, if I want my high click through rates on my AdSense Ads, or links to my shopping cart, don't I want to limit the amount of visual distractions on my page so people just concentrate on the objects that make me money? Answer: The best way to definitively answer this question is to TEST. Here’s some test results: In one round of testing, I experimented with 4 different layouts both with and without images. Here's what I found: Images that are in-context (that means, if your page is about vacuums, then you should have pictures of vacuums) will cause a visitor to stay past the 8 second barrier 33% of the time. You see, 40%-60% of your visitors will leave your page within the first 8 seconds. SO anything you can do to keep them around longer will help your overall click through rate. Second, a large single image on the left hand side of a page will out-pull a large image on the right hand side of an page - unless there’s an AdSense Block - then it’s usually the opposite, but not by much. Third, ELIMINATING ALL OTHER BLUE UNDERLINED LINKS on a page and leaving only the blue underlined links that you want your visitors to take action on will dramatically increase your click through rates WHEN combined with IMAGES. The bottom line is, Images reinforce the reason for a visitor to stay on your site. Use them often and keep them relevant. Question: There had been discussions with Brad about how Latent Semantic Indexing can help me rank more effectively for my primary search phrases along with other closely related words. If I use lexically-related words as part of my content on my page, is that going to screw up media bot's ability to serve the right kind of Ads (Ad Sense wise) on my site? Answer: Great question, and here's what I've learned about AdSense after creating about 200 sites full of content and testing AdSense on all of them: 1. Media Bot is far less sophisticated than Google Bot. Back in the day (Like, 1997) when Yahoo was the big player, you used to be able to rank for a phrase simply by keyword stuffing your chosen keyword into meta tags. Media bot is not much more sophisticated than that. Meaning, you can help Media Bot determine what Ads to serve simply by having your primary keywords in the following places on your page: 2. Title Tag. This carries the most weight as far as Media Bot is concerned. 3. H1 or Heading Tag. 4. Your URL - yep, that's right. This is a powerful tactic ESPECIALLY for interior pages. Get your keyword (or at least the core part of your keyword phrase) in your URL of your sub-pages. 5. Links LEAVING the page. Another counter-intuitive tactic. I've been able to create a page of content about merchant accounts and get AdSense ads about Tapestries because the first few links on my page were to my Tapestry sites. Anchor Text is important here. 6. The first 200 words of content should contain your keyword phrase 1 time, MAYBE 2. The best part about all of these optimization techniques (except the keyword in the URL part) is that they are very effective for Natural Search Engine Optimization. The bottom line is, you can absolutely use Latent Semantic Indexing to optimize your page “Naturally†while still getting the best AdSense Ads that you can. Clearly, these guys know what they’re talking about. And the StomperNet members are giving out information in these videos that I would PAY for.
