SEO, WordPress, and (/) or (.php, .htm) preference

So, I would like to keep pushing the issue of any help from Wordpress to rewrite their Pages to have an extension at the end of it instead of a directory.

Someone else had the same idea, but it was shot down saying that search engines don't have a preference between a directory (domain.com/page1/) and a file extension (domain.com/page1.htm). Is this true?

Here's what a moderator said at WordPress.

I can't see why it would make any difference if you had a file extension or not, as the mod_rewrite setup allows you to specify a "pretty" URI anyway
