There are soo many things you can do to help improve SEO. Heres a few extensions/suggestions which could save you some time: System canonicalisation (this is in joomla extensions): make http://www.yourdomain.com primary rather than http://yourdomain.com Site Name: Set a global site name. This comes as standard in 1.6 but not 1.5. This will ensure your site title is in every page of your website. E.g. Computer Repair r us | Call outs http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/seo-a-metadata/3352 Change Alias to keywords in menu manger: By adding simple keywords, it can have an increase of ranking. For example if your a college website and you have your url as yourcollege.ac.uk/art-design.html try adding a seperator in the menu so it ends up as yourcollege.ac.uk/courses/a-levels/art-design.html. You should keep your page title in sync with your alias e.g. yourcollege | courses | a-levels | art-design. If your not sure on keywords, try using google adword tools to give you some ideas.
