SMO if you want immediate traffic. Problem is that you have to continue to do it if you want the continued traffic. SEO is more strategic and long term. It takes a lot longer to ramp up, but once you are getting the traffic it doesn't require as much constant work to sustain it like SMO does (unless you're ranking by using blog commenting, article submission, forum sigs, etc. whose effectiveness fade over time as opposed to natural links whose effectiveness tend not to fade).
