SEO vs. SEM - Which one is more profitable ?

    SEO is part of SEM and a lot of people do not understand that. SEM is the puzzle, SEO is nothing but a piece of that puzzle. Optimizing a website is great, but that is just part of your marketing campaign. So SEM is more profitable then SEO.

    the cost effectiveness is dependant on the product.

    if it is something you can not directly sell [ie. your site relies on CPM and CPC itself] - SEO.

    If you directly sell a product then it depends on the life span of the product... some products are seasonal for example. short term products are best done with SEM, while longer-term products benefit more from SEO, while SEM is recommended on the earlier stage of the product life cycle, before you are visible via. SEO - prosuming the product has a known brand/competition...
