SEO tips please :)

Hi. I want to get as close to the top of the first page of Google as possible, for the following keyword strings:
Position is the current position my site holds on Google for the keyword string.

    My site: http://bit.ly/dL2XYL

So what can I optimise/what should I do in order to rank higher? And how would I maintain said position? (Please actually look at my site rather than copy and paste some generic tips :p)

    NOTES:
    • I know my navigation is in image form (all with alt attributes), I do know this is supposedly bad for SEO. Should I put text navigation in the footer then (for SEO purposes)? (eg. "Season 1 - Season 2 - Season 3 etc.")
    • I do have a sitemap, and Google knows of this via their "webmaster tools" program
    • Also I have tried as much as possible to optimise the site, but not being a professional I've ran out of things I know to do. My point being, I've already started somewhat toward optimising it already - I'm not trying to get you to do all the work for me!

Looking forward to hearing all suggestions! :)
    Regards, John.

PS. Please don't post the true URL in this thread for indexing purposes.

EDIT: I am talking about Google.com, NOT my localised version (google.co.uk)

I'm sorry you didn't get more replies earlier, but after checking out your sites, here's my 2 cents:

You definitely need more content on your site, it doesn't necessarily have to be original... a lot of people believe that dupe content is penalized in google's eyes but from personal experience I've found that as long as you don't literally copy and paste claiming that it's your original content you're fine. Try getting more news and articles relevant to your niche. Compile them, and make a top ten list of things B&B say or get the 3 most interesting articles about B&B and make a post with all 3 articles in it and entitle it "My favorite B&B articles".... Find some fan fiction on B&B if you can. Make your site a site that die hard B&B fans would want to bookmark! Add some posts about the background of B&B, the creators, where are they now, why you love them etc.

To rank for the keywords you want, you'd also need to have more text content related to the keywords. Write a little summary of every episode with the keywords you like spread through the whole site. Google loves text content.

Also, I'm not sure what platform you're using for your site, but if you're not using Wordpress already, I'd suggest switching over if you have the time. It's much easier to optimize for SEO especially with free plugins like all-in-one seo.

Next step is to start building some serious backlinks to the site, you can do this by creating hubpages, squidoo lenses and social bookmarking your site on sites like digg, stumbleupon, etc.

If you get the backlinking step right, you'll be able to rank no1 in no time.

One last tip, to be no 1 for your keywords, you have to beat the site ranking in first place, that's it, forget about the rest, so just make your site better in terms of the niche and B&B, give it a bit of time, continue adding content every few days and you'll be ranking eventually.

I'm no seo expert but I hope this helps, it's 3:20am here and I had too many beers.

I like the title. The Desciption could be a little bit more keyword dense without overdoing it. Definately change "Butt-head" to "Butthead" in the description. I noticed you have no meta keywords. I know ppl say this is an obsolete technique, but still... it doesn't hurt as long as though keywords are seen less then twice in your content. Speaking of content, you need A LOT more content, but make sure it is keyword dense somewhere around 4% for your main keyword phrase. Finally start building backlinks and give it some time. I took my first SEO site from an unaged domain name to top 10 in SERPs for "disney reward", but it took a month.

    @pikimaroo

The only reason I don't have much content is because I didn't want to be a fan site, but rather a streaming site. I guess I could combine the two elements, but with the main focus on the streaming. Thank you for your suggestions on the type of content I could add, it's a great help and I'll get onto it right away.

I had put some thought into having a description for each episode, but for some reason I never did do it - I guess it would be a good idea. Again, I'll see to it that it gets done.

Yes, I'm using WordPress (a HEAVILY modified version however). It does have SEO plugins installed as well as other related ones such as a Sitemap plugin, Friendlier URL plugin and even a plugin that reduces loading times, again for SEO purposes :)

Yeah I knew about building backlinks but I was really not sure how to do it. I guess this has answered my question though (hubpages, squidoo lense, social bookmarking, maybe a few blog links too).

    Yeah makes sense :)

Haha funnily enough I've just got back from the pub (and maybe had one or two more pints that I should have) too!

A big thanks for the advice buddy, it's been a good help.

    @marharri

I totally agree with you there on the description, but to be honest I couldn't think of a keyword-rich sentence to use without it being, as you put, overdone. I'll definitely try and think something up over the weekend though :). "Butt-head" has been modified to "Butthead" as per your suggestion.

Fair enough. As you worked out, I didn't bother with meta keywords (in a lot of people's opinions) it is obsolete nowadays. I have however added the meta keyword tag.

Okay great, as mentioned before I'll start on that now.

Will do. I guess that's a pretty important thing you mentioned about time - it won't happen overnight I gotta get on with it and be patient.

Thanks to you too, it's nice to see that the majority of you two's (pikimaroo and marharri) points have overlapped somewhat so it makes me more confident that I've got sound advice. Not only that but you've both said a bit that the other hasn't, so I've got even more advice to go on.

    +rep given to both.

To summarise (this bit is mainly me speaking to myself now) I've got to:
    • Add content! (Including but not limited to video descriptions, articles, fun content.) In other words turn the site into a mini FANSITE too - that should sort the problem out.
    • Backlinks, backlinks, and more backlinks.
    • Come up with a more descriptive & keyword-rich meta description.

    :)

Just to add, the image navigation isn't too much of a problem then? You guys never mentioned it.

Nothing inherently wrong with image links unless they're supposed to be backlinks. They could be a little bigger or closer to the top or left side if that's your intention. Honestly I like to save those spaces for ads. If it were my site, I'd leave it like you have it and chock it full of ads. Then again, that may not be your intention. Good luck and ty for the rep! :D

You need 2 things to get top ranking.

    1. Contents
Words are the best for SEO. You can't do much on image or video. So, add more content to your site. I suggest to post at least 500 words of content for each page with sprinkling all your targeted keywords at 1-2% keyword density.

    2. Back links
Get more back links with the anchor of your targeted keyword from high quality pages with below scores:
    - relevant
    - dofollow
    - low outbound links
    - no outbound links to any bad neighborhood sites
    - aged domain
    - not from free domain or blogs
    - bold/itallic/underlined
    - content section
    - avoid sidebar links instead concentrate on deep links and contextual
    - try to get unique IP domain back links
    - etc

I believe if you can get 10 - 15 articles posted with these keywords on ezine, surely your ranking will begin to go more up in the google.
