hi all! i just wanted to know what else comes under SEO category. 1)backlinks 2)directory submission 3) social bookmarking wht else? can u guys gimme some tools to SEO my website?
I would suggest you take a look of your web site first and make sure it is well optimized for the keywords you want. Backlinks won't work until your site is SEO properly. Start doing a good keyword research using the Google keyword tool. Make sure all the title tags are well written for each page. Proper use of H tags would help. Create good internal linking with the keywords in anchor text. Make sure your site can be read by search engines. I would stay away from any SEO software. They are worthless.
Agree with the above. Also, make sure your keyword combinations are sprinkled through the text in your page - especially at the top. Use <h2>-<h6> for subheadings - again make sure keyword combinations are sprinkled in them. Use keyword combinations in alt text and in URL names and image names. Don't overdo things though and stuff the page with keywords - this will lead to penalties for spamming.

I use SheerSEO to check my website optimisation. It shows you keyword count within your pages and gives you a weekly update on your rankings for keywords in Google and Yahoo http://www.sheerseo.com/
Those are what we call off-page seo tactics, you still have to take care of on-page seo factors like: meta tags, keyword density & distribution, alt tags, etc. To add to your off-page seo tactics also consider: article submission, comment posts, etc.
thanks guys! ur replies really helped me... i guess meta tags, heading and sub heading should have the right keywords and right content for it to be optimized on google,yahoo,msn etc. .. is tht wht u all wanna say?
There are some free SEO tools at http://tools.khrido.com/ and http://www.seobook.com/ that I use often. Some are my favorite and others are ok. So, you can choose the ones according to your requirements and optimize your website.
