Exactly. Since none of us really know Google's algorithm, at best, the things you hear about SEO are educated guesses. I have my own educated guesses based on what I saw with Big Name websites like CNN.com, Microsoft.com, Drudgereport.com, etc. Often, however, what you hear about SEO is simply a parroting of what "somebody" else said.

I'd avoid spammy techniques, since those have hurt many websites. I'd work on having great, quality content and great, quality backlinks. Make your website super appealing to human visitors; you can't go wrong with a great website.

All great tips, thanks for the post and so much helpful information. Can anyone clarify the Navigation tip? Some in the thread say it doesn't matter if it's left or right. Is it critical that it is on the right side or listed in a way that the search engines find your content first? Won't search engines recognize a Nav bar and ignore it?

 

Best advice is often the simplest: Do things by the book. Use html tags the way they are meant to be used. Dont try to cheat and dont not bother using tags.

Do net get obsessed with seo. It seems people nowadays are more worried with their serps and page rank than their actual websites.

 

its called cloaking or doorway pages. its not redirection.

doesnt matter. In fact, you won't be banned if you don't link out to bad neighbor hood. Google understands other sites are not in ur control. However, if a thousand different bad neighborhoods link to you, google will view it as some sort of spamming technqie and may rank urs lower or something. but it adjustable. Just contact them and let the matter out. Such things anyway don't happen and don worry about that. Otherwise the big players will have time only to get penalized. haha.

 

Well said. That's what I say too. Don worry about your SEO and all. just do your work and let others do their work. recognize talent and give link out and you will get links too. Eventually google will look only at your content to rank you higher.

I think it's mostly because you can't rank a website 1-10. But pagerank and SERP rank are easily quantified....
