Hi, I am trying to apply the 'table trick' to a template that was given to me. I've done the table trick many times, but this time the menu is above the content like a banner: |--------------| | MENU | |--------------| | | | | | CONTENT | | | | | |--------------| Code (markup): Is this possible? Thanks for your help!
If the menu is above the "table trick" then your pages will definitely not load faster. Instead, the browser will wait for the menu to load first before the tables. I don't think this has eve been an issue because most menus, even if css or javascript are usually very light in "loading time" so you'd expect a great boost in any case.
If this is solely for ranking gain, I would save the time of doing it and submit just one link to a directory. It will have the same ranking impact and can be done in minutes.
The table trick is used for faster loading time in a browser. For example for bulky text or image pages. It has no benefits for the search engines because the search engine that can read tables hasn't been invented yet.
I just want the html for the 'content' to come before the html for the 'menu'. I thought that most people knew about the table trick - the way it usually works is that the menu bar is on the left hand side (like traditional web page layout), but by using a small empty cell, one is able to have the html of the content appear before the html for the menu.
There is a common misconception amongst newbies that using the "table trick" is better for search engine ranking because it avoid using nested tables. According to this belief, which is obviously totally false, parlaying "chunks" of texts in rows of tables in a page will help the search engines crawl, index and rank the pages better on the serps. The only benefit this has is page loading faster for the visitor.
Because you can use it to control the positioning of content. If you so wanted it would be easy to have the first bit of content in your html file be displayed at the bottom of the page.
Um, I kinda have no choice in the matter . Whether it helps our rankings or not, my boss has asked me to apply the table trick to this template. If it is possible to apply it, then I'd like to do so. One less explanation to make! I'd rather just do it and be done with it. If you know how this can be done, please share .
The table trick for better rankings is 100% nonsense. Just a fairy tale. Spend your time on content/links.
