I am working on seo for my website and have found that i cannot rank any higher for one of my keywords as im competing against high authority websites, now i'd like to target long tail keywords which include the main part of the keyword, ie:

keyword im ranking for is say: firstword secondword

and i have reached high for that, but there are long tail keywords that are: firstword thirdword fourthword etc

so should i just do seo for the first word now? as there are too many long tail keywords, and i am hoping that if i can do seo for the first word it would improve the ranking of the longer tail keywords?

It definitely would, but it'd be nice if you had an exact match heading/title/etc somewhere on the page you're trying to rank for your long-tail.

Also, you could grab a keywords tracker and see how many searches each of your long-tails gets a month, so that you could filter out less popular ones and deal only with the terms that are worth it.

Kianu42 is right. Check out a keyword tool like the Google External Keyword tool and check which long tail keywords you're targeting are worth going after. Maybe you will find variations that are shorter and have less competition.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

I think you are not aware about latest happenings in SEO world. You should not target money keywords only. You have to target long tail keywords, branded keywords to get ranking for long tail keywords and money keywords.
    Simple rule is:
-Build few links for money keywords
-Build more links for long tail and branded keywords

Employing a long-tail keyword strategy expands the reach of a webpage or site beyond just trying to capture users searching the highly competitive short-tail phrases, and avoids the issue of having all of your eggs in one basket. Utilizing long-tail keywords in on- and off-site content will signal to the search engines that these phrases are relevant to your site, with the goal of the engines serving up your site and/or off-site assets on a search engine results page (SERP) for related search queries. Rather than focusing on only shorter, more competitive keywords, a long-tail strategy allows you to target a broad swath of keyword combinations, which ultimately expands your reach.
