I would like to know what's the main difference between SEO for normal website and a web directory. My company has started new travel web directory where other travelling related websites can submite their websites. I need to know what are the strategies and tips for promoting this web directory for search engine. Please suggest.
One thing I would suggest is to have some content on each of the directory pages, not just links to the sites and short descriptions. If you can write good quality descriptions of each site, or even a little mini review of some of them (I realize it would be hard to do this for all of them). Even if you just have a paragraph describing the category you are on, it would be helpful.

Yes, you can do article submission and social media for off page SEO. You will also get a lot of backlinks just by nature of being a directory, if you have a quality directory.
Submit the directory to sites like http://www.directorycritic.com which list directories of various niches.
