It's not clear what you're asking. If you're asking if it's useful for a beginner to find out about SEO in order to advance their own sites, then yes. If you're asking if, as a beginner, should you get into the SEO business, then no.

If you want to rank your site well in search engines in lots of competition then you need to do SEO. If you don't care about traffic from search engine then don't care about SEO.

    You have a site.

You need it to rank well in the search engines, so that people come to your site on typing that term.

SEO basically means making your site look more qualified in the eyes of the search engines to rank for certain keywords.

    Hi Titan,

SEO is basically a combination of best practices from a wide-ranging field of disciplines spanning from accessibility, information architecture, marketing (preferably word of mouth), semantic Web site development, usability, and Web copywriting, but geared towards search engines and the people who use them to find what they're looking for online. If you're looking to learn how to maximize your Web site's presence and visibility in various engines' search results pages, then I can recommend wholeheartedly that you read the Search Engine Optimization FAQ over at SitePoint as well as Chris Beasley's SEO Guide. Both resources are free, contain loads of information and links to other resources that will help you improve your ability once you've learned the basics, and will also help maximize your long-term potential for maximum gain (SEO is not a get-rich quick scheme, contrary to what the con artists trying to hock their snake oil may try to claim).

There's really no point in paying for SEO "advice" when you have wonderful free resources such as the ones I linked you to available. If you're going to spend your money on a Web site, spend it on a competent Web copywriter, Web developer and a marketing/promotion expert instead of an SEO "expert". If you do decide to bring in an SEO consultant, make sure that he or she knows what they're doing, has an established portfolio available, and is not afraid to provide impartial third-party references upon request (bonus points if they include some references to clients who did not like a certain aspect or two of their work).

SEO is basically leveraging free marketing from the search engines. If you have a limited ad/promotion budget, its worth a ton.
