I don't think so, as most se's algorithms are proprietary & not disclosed, the curriculum of any SEO course would be making assumptions, regardless of how many of those assumptions turn out to be true.

    I agree with eXe.

Also, SEO shouldn't be added to the curriculum because there's already enough competition out there. Let's all agree to keep SEO as secret as possible and those that do know it can duke it out in the SERPs. :D

    Terrible idea.
As blazinCrazy said, there's enough competition out there as it is. Now think of the problems it would make if you would have to battle hundreds of students + your normal competition.

Nah... it shouldn't be a general computer course. Maybe an upper-division marketing course, but probably not even worth it then.

From where I came from SEO was covered in some of the courses/subjects, but not as thorough :D and I guess the Subject was worth it, regardless if they were mostly theories and assumptions

I took an "Internet Marketing" course in my upper division Marketing studies. It was a joke! We cover what is the internet? What is email marketing? How can you advertise on the internet?

It was so basic it was sad. I spent my class time doing other work. I remember on the of the test questions "What does PPC stand for?"

Don't search engine companies change their formula every now and then? If it's always changing, it's rather hard to teach in a course.

Maybe as a subject would work.

Amen to that. Computer courses generate guys who can explain the best way to design an operating system but they don't necessarily know how to make dollar number one on line. A good marketing or business statistics course should touch on SEO and SEM and discuss arbitrage, multivariate regression, design of experiments, etc.

SEO as an educational course is a good idea because of the purpose that you want people know about this field. But just like what other said it would be hard to teach SEO on Universities and colleges because of the constant change of trends and algorithms in this field. And what they learn from the course may not be applicable or useful after the course.

If it was taught at uni, it would be more of a marketing/ebusiness subject.

There are concepts that relate to SEO that can be taught that remain as the field of SEO changes. Arbitrage (buy low, sell hight) is subject that can be addressed in an SEO framework. Multivariate regression would allow you to take all of your known inputs and outputs and reverse engineer an algorithm. There are concepts of statistics and marketing are not new and will always be behind SEO even if the exact tactics change.
