Actually one should ignore all the advice in the article.

I am sure everyone at DP is aware of web sites that have very little useful or original content that are ranking in the top ten positions on every search engine.

I completely disagree. If your wanting to build yourself a long-lasting online business, creating good content is imperative to establishing credibility with your visitors. Customers are much more likely to purchase off someone they trust.

Creating poor content/scraper sites may do ok in the short term but it's not building yourself a real business.

you guys seem to mix the "building a long terms business" thing with actual rankings.

Sure there are many things you can do to build a long term business, but many of them don't actually increase your rankings

What I was trying to get across is that although you may manage to rank well for a poor content site, your conversions will be terrible due to the visitor feeling your not credible. Isnt converting the visitor what its all about?

Agreed. You can get visitors to your site, but if it doesn't portray credibility to the end user, there is less likely to be a conversion. Same applies to using Adwords. You can get clicks, but if your content does not peak the user's interest or portray credibility, then conversions will be low.

One thing to consider though, which would make more a good website with no visitors or a junk website with thousands a day?

Long term business is great and I agree do both why not, but if you have to focus on one, visitors is sadly more important than content. Maybe SE's will change that in time, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

That's the main problem as a searcher though. Sometimes I have to really be patient and look deeper (up to about 10 pages) just to find what I am looking for. :O

Yup. Content is king but visitors are like the masses who could topple a king.

Yea, if a customer comes to your site, and you use poor grammer and your content is poor chances are they won't want to buy from you. That way your buisness can last.

So true. I have been thinking of making some of these changes on a few sites but am stuck between choices.

On one of my travel sites I am getting heavy traffic as I finally hit top three for several different phrases that I have been after for quite some time. The thing is, the site really hardly has any unique content at all. I wrote a few articles here and there but most are just copy and paste jobs from my affiliate for hostel review purposes.

I want to provide good solid unique content so that my visitors will come back and book beds next year, but at the same time I know that if I focus on SEO through internal and external link tactics I will continue seeing top results for more and more keywords.

Time is an issue, I just cannot decide what to do with it.

    Thoughts?

Content's good but then how much unique content can you build....i feel you may as well take good content on to your site and maybe focus on getting links to those pages and get those pages ranked higher...

building unique content and that too lots of it is not only time-consuming but may be demotivating if you don't see results in the desired time period

Hi guys, I'm the author of the article that this discussion originated from. I think the amount of unique content a site can have will be based on its theme, I mean if a person runs a site for webmaster's there are an endless amount of topics and issues which can be written about.

I agree (obviously) with the poster who said that trust has to be created in order for the long term goals of a business to be meet, but this trust building exercise (of providing content) just so happens to be a very very solid tactic on the search engines too.

Afterall content-less sites could 100% disappear if some new search tech/algorthim comes about that makes them lose their positions, content is better in the long run.

I hate this article, and webpro. This article focuses on how good and unique content is the best medicine for a low ranking site, but this content isn't good, and it sure as heck-fire isn't unique! I have seen about 2 bazillion articles like this one on webpro, and each is a sadder excuse for a backlink than the next.

What is their moto? "Webpro: The SEO sellout."

    That site is horse-puckey.

I suppose what I am saying is that a retarded monkey could find this information anywhere on the web, and I think it is a sorry excuse for a backlink, and I'm a little upset we gave it one! This article is just shameful.

    Shame on them. Shame!

    Content is king ??
Hmmm, depends on what you define as content. But that's by the by, if content is King then he's queer - content doesn't matter jack without traffic.

Content as far as I'm concerned is what drives your visitor to do what you want him to do. Buy from your sites (if you sell anything), click on an advertiser (if you advertise anything), sign up for your ezine - or whatever it is your site is designed to do.
So what one person thinks of as good content doesn't matter jack shit. The content can be fantastic in quality (spelling, grammar, amount of info etcetc) , if it doesn't convert then it's crap content. Quite often a little to wet the appitite will convert far better than giving out all the information.
A site exists for a purpose (normally). Good content is what gets a visitor to complete the purpose that the site was designed for, nothing more and nothing less.

Traffic can convert without good content - good content should help it convert better. So as one can do the job without the other then Traffic is far more important than content.

I have a perfect Idea - keep doing the SEO, and with all the time you spend trying to explain things to gworld - take that time to write content. Problem solved!
