hey guys, just curious if anyone has the time to have a quick look at my new Southern Highlands site to see if there are any SEO problems or issues that might be obvious (or not so obvious). it's only been up for a few weeks and seems to be doing well, but obviously i'd love for it to do better. i've tried to cross link everything and do the usual seo friendly techniques, but as this is my first attempt at real seo, was hoping for some pointers/hints/etc. thanks grant
maybe put a few keywords in your <title></title> tag more descriptive link title text with a few keywords in, also a site map?
Very nice and well done site! Here are my suggestions: Accessibility 1. Change the link "Skip Navigation" to "Skip to main content", while most users know that way. http://redish.net/content/papers/interactions.html http://www.webnauts.net/skip-navigation.html 2. The accesskey "s" has already been used. The same accesskey should not be used more than once. Here also I would suggest you using a number instead of a letter for an accesskey. WindowEyes defines the keystroke ALT + S as a function that reads that status bar. Including S in your list of accesskeys will not work with several versions of WindowEyes. http://www.wats.ca/articles/accesskeyconflicts/37 3. HTML 4.01 and XHTML require the "legend" element in fieldsets. Use this element immediately after the "fieldset" start tag. Mark Up (Coding) 1. Two links on your page have following problem(?) The "href" attribute specifies an internal link that you may not want. An internal link name should usually follow the # character, but it doesn't in this case. However, if you are referencing the top of the current document, then it is ok, because an internal link name is not needed. SEO 1. Add the title right after the <head> tag, then the description tag, then you keyword and then the rest elements. 2. Increase your title to max. 70 characters. 3. Reduce your description to 150 characters instead of 187. 4. Increase your keywords from 2 to more than 4, while most search engines read more than 4 keywords. Though don't go more than 1000 characters. 5. You have 104 urls on your page. Some Search Engines have problems with more than 100 urls on a page.
Absolutely loving the site, looks quality The only thing that confused me was the "You are here" text, I thought maybe it should appear next to the breadcrumbs to the right. Anyway this is such a minor thing because the site looks good and is so easy to navigate. Don't suppose you could recommend any decent CSS sites that you may use for reference when designing your sites or that have influenced the development of your style?
Thanks for your kind words I'll try to do something else with the breadcrumbs, i never noticed the 'you here' are as being confusing, but i can see what you mean now. i'll have a play around and see if i can make it more friendly. in regards to sites for inspiration, i'd say stuff like CSS Vault Unmatched Style CSS Zen Garden are usually great starting points. They tend to usually showcase the best css sites. In terms of inspiration for my site, it was actually an audio program called abelton live. Although i haven't seen a screenshot of the program in a while, i tried to use the white border type effect that they use (at least from what i remember they used). i could be completely wrong now i have to try and find some screenshots of it to see how close i got *edit: wow i just looked at a few screenshots of ableton and it looks nothing like i remembered! the memory does strange things sometimes.
