Reverse engineering means to go backwards to see how a particular website has ranked so well. For most people they start with finding out where this particular website has gotten its backlinks (And usually they steal the backlinks if possible). Then by looking at their source code you can see there <head><h1><h2>etc. I use this type of engineering to determine my competition for a particular phrase or group of phrases. If you know what your competition has then you know what you have to do to bypass them in the search engines. Hope this helps.
