How do I find out what keywords a particular website is getting traffic from? I need to analyze my competition. Your response is appreciated
please take a look this to check the demand of the keywords>> http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
They get traffic from keywords for which they rank well in SERPs. If they are your competitors, you can assume they are trying to rank for the same keywords as yours with maybe some alterations (synonymes, 1 or 2 more terms...). So perform query for keywords related to your business, and analyse the SERPs. As far as I know, there is no way to know from which keywords they got traffic, you would need access to their analytics controle panel to know that.
alright. what if I want to promote someones product (be an affiliate) and I want to find out exactly what a particular site ranks for. Overture wouldnt work in this case. I mean, if I had access to weblogs I would be able to check the traffic source.
Unless there is a good tool out there most work would need to be done by hand. You could setup Google Alerts for checks against your competitor. You might also be able to use the alerts with different commands to figure out more info on your competition. Take a quick read of this that I posted a while back, it might give you an idea on how to use Google alerts for what you need.
Try to use webmaster tools such as submitexpress.com/tools.html and iwebtool.com/tools. It will help.
how can he do that when he cant add the stats code onto the competitions web pages? Or are you thinking he needs the stats for his own pages?
Good catch it seems most of the people responding to this thread didn't read the original post carefully....he wants to find out exactly what keywords his competitors site is ranked for and which one's bring them traffic..... there is no tool to do that....you have to it manually
Ya know actually just using the search engine you want to target and doing searches for different keywords and looking at how many results you get back works well too. Make sure you have your phrase in "quotes" so can you see how many pages are actually targeting that keyphrase or word. Now just compared the results the search engine returns compared too the number of pages "actually" targeting that term and that should help you identify popular keywords and phrases. Test plurals also too see which one is more popular and target them both. -D
I ran into a vender at AdTech in San Francisco offering competition analysis, including keyword stats... probably based on adwords, but they said organic ranking stats as well. They described it as: Search intelligence for online advertising, search marketing and online marketing. They're called Hitwise. I didn't get their rates, but I got the feeling they were VERY pricey.
