I can't figure out why a couple other sites out rank me.

I have a site www.sierra-vista-homes-land.com. Created this site in 2001 under the name of mcnabs.com. A couple years ago I created the domain sierra-vista-homes-land.com and permanatly forward mcnabs.com to it.

When I search "sierra vista arizona real estate" I get sites like www.sierravistahomes.info and www.haymorerealestate.com at the top and I am lower down on the first page. It appears to me that I have better keyword density, backlinks and aprox the same age.

Any ideas of what to do to get ahead of these other sites?

I have never tested it myself, but I learnt 2 years ago, never to use more than one hyphen, and I never have.

okay, first the keyword density is not a factor, second you may have to consider a 301 to a better domain name, your domain has too many dashes in it, sierravistaarizonarealestate "dot" com is for sale on SEDO.com, try your luck on sedo, you can't go wrong with that domain:), the improvement from a 301 to that domain will be instant, and because of a higher click rate than your competitors due to the fact that the domain is brandable and attractive, you will end up #1 no matter how long it takes.

if it was my own website or if you was my client i would definitely recommend the investment in that domain (even if i think that it will be sold for a reasonable price).

    good luck.

What would a fair price for a domain name like that?

I am also thinking that sierravistaazrealestate.com would be better.

What about sierravistaarizonarealestate.info? It is available. Does the .com or .info make a difference.

All of my advertising and stuff refers to the site as www.mcnabs.com so I am not worried about advertising this domain.

I did a test about 6 months ago, and I found that domains with more than one dash were harder to rank. Compared to domains that just had the keywords. For example ChicagoKitchenRemodeling.com was MUCH easier to rank than Chicago-Kitchen-Remodeling.com Google sees the more relevant result usually with less that one dash.

    dear,
you have used too many hypens. moreover you have redirected one site to other: though permanently create negative impact on crawler. but its good that your site is coming on first page.

It seems that the problem is in your domain name. You overuse dashes in your domain name separating your targeted keywords. We all know that dashes are important, but the use of it has a limit. In your case, that's the main dilemma.

Absolutely BS, NON-SENSE, there is a huge different in rankings between a .info and a .com, if you cannot invest 6.95 dollars in a .com, how do you expect google to trust your business website.

sierravistaazrealestate.com, is good too, as for pricing, it is worth what you think is fair for your BUSINESS/Niche, it's also a question of luck, some domainers are reasonable and some are totally insane.

this is how you do a 301:

    http://www.website-development-training.com/301/

and no, a 301 is basically saying to Google : HI, this is my OLD SITE AND HERE IS MY NEW WEBSITE.

doing 5 * 301's is not going to help you get better rankings, it may even rise some red flags.

    good luck

1.) I checked the redirect and the 301 is setup properly
2.) Fewer dashes is always nice, but that should not in and of itself prevent search rankings
3.) The number of links and PR of a competitors' site is a nice indicator of the competition, but one strong relevant link is sometimes all that is needed to push a site up.

    Suggestion:
You are already on the first page, smartly gather outbound links, and you should see a nice move up.
