SEO people help me out...

    Would it be a good idea to purchase a website with a PR 4 that has about 200-500 random backlinks already that is perhaps a couple years old... then turn it into a adult site? like a hub type site where you use it to target some keywords, and list your freesites and blogs, etc.

    If its cheap and somewhat even close to a relevant name... would that help with SEO and stuff for getting SE traffic?

    those links will not be relevant links and will not have your anchor text for adult site therefore will not help you in SERP ranking. it will help however for PR if the links stay

    Here is the few list of Google optimization tips for get more traffic to your website.

    1) Insert keywords at right place on your meta tags.

    2) Name your Images with Descriptive Titles and alt text.

    3) Use relevant text on your website.

    4) Use Ad sense to assess overall content relevance.

    5) Optimize Your Title and Meta tags.

    It could be usefull if the theme of the site before was a bit related to dating or adult... Meanwhile links do not live long if the site is down or redesigned.

    The major change and content will be changed so it is not wise to purchase it. Also, the backlinks of the said site has a different anchor text to yours. It will not help you in SERPs.
