SEO-One page at a time?

Does it make sense to try and optimize a single page for a few keywords, to demonstrate to a client what you can do, before taking on the whole site?

Its difficicult to guarantee ANY SEO results to a client and you may spend alot of time trying with just one page only to have them say thanks but no thanks!
Better to offer them a service based on the components of SEO rather than results maybe. Like onpage optimizeation and one way back link generation.
    Just a thought ;-)

No, I wasn't going to guarantee anything. I was just going to optimize a single page for one or 2 keywords, build some backlinks and hopefully show them some good results over time. The idea would be to do this before taking on a site with several hundred pages and so my client can see I know what I'm doing. Is this a bad idea?

I always do a few web pages at a time, it's easier to handle the load and track results. A proper SEO consultant should be trying different keywords and phrase FOR EACH web page, not just 1.

I treat each page as its own website so to speak, focusing on 2 keywords per page, but with attention also given to the other aspects of the site to ensure the site as a whole is in context with each page and the whole web site.:D

Anyone that can guarantee SEO results is lying. If they expect you to guarantee your SEO results, you need to educate your client on the fact that NO ONE can do that, and to a large extent, your ability to SEO will be dictated by their budget (how much can they afford to pay for GOOD high PR links) and how aggressive your competition is.

Don't get mad at your client, they don't understand SEO. Educate them and they will comply happily.

sorry, read the post too quickly but agree with all comments, you cannot guarantee but i suppose it depends on what they are wanting, how much they are willing to pay etc. It also takes time for seo's to respond to a site so you cannot even give a truely accurate time frame. saying that with the right seo and enough time your site will climb the rankings..

You could optimize one of your own pages for the keywords and then show them if you get results. Then you can slap some ads on it and maybe make some money for your work. If they're convinced you can link to them from your page.

I agree with Logic, set up a test page and show them how high you can get your own page ranked and how long it took you to get there.

Well that's acceptable.. there's nothing wrong in trying. Anyway you're on the right track coz SEO must be applied on site's main and inner pages as well for better results though this will take a lot of time.. it's a very tedious task.. so Good luck to you!
