SEO on new site - where does traffic come from initially?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by gil857, Nov 23, 2006.

Question here. I'm about to start SEO on a new site once I get it complete. I know it takes a long while to start getting organic search engine traffic, but where can you get initial traffic when you first start seo (without paying for advertising)? Directory submissions?

    Thanks

mostly directory submissions and link exchanges.
i sometimes also put a few $$ into it to start with and buy a couple of decent links.

Extremely relevant link exchanges. Don't buy links.

Submitting to directories will only bring you one time visits, after the directory owner reviewed your website, probably they will never come back. Submitting to directories is for backlinks.

You'll see traffic from MSN pretty immediately if you do it right.

Depending on the site - social bookmarking, commenting on blogs from your sector, forum posting... There are lots of possibilities to get traffic w/o the search engines initially.

    Hi Jon.West and a389951,
You both have info that I would be interested in exploring. I'd love to give out rep points to someone who wanted to go into detail about these methods or any others.

I am aware of posting in forums and blogs but I'd be interested in reading more about social bookmarking, and MSN, and other possibilities. I am sure the thread starter would also appreciate any details you might want to give us. :)

    Sure, why not?

MSN loves good on the page optimization and fresh content. If you point a couple decent links at your site with the right anchor text and optimize your pages correctly, you'll see results pretty instantly. There's not a "sandbox" to speak of or penalty for a new site. If you post your URL or PM it to me I can give you more specific recommendations.

    How 'bout that rep?

    Thanks Jon West,

I gave you a green and I appreciate the info. I'm gradually learning this stuff and have focused on Google for a year or so now. I haven't given any thought to the other engines.

Well you have a point, MSN is based on page optimization and fresh content. But in Google, quality is a must because the sites indexed by Google are mostly relevant to the title and the content. So if your site is indexed by Google and it came to top Google's SERPs, there is a possibility to have a larger ROI or which we say Return on Investment.

Directory submissions is one of the most basic methods to collect traffic. But also try free classifieds like craigslist or other free classifieds. Create forum signatures that is linked to your site. Then create an article with a link to your site and submit it to high PR or Traffic sites.

In short, there are methods on how to get initial traffic.

So far we've got the following suggestions for getting free traffic to a new site:

-good page optimization and a few good backlinks for MSN
    -posting in forums & blogs
-directory submission (though there is talk that isn't long lasting traffic)
    -link exchange program
-give free articles away (with your link) to high PR/traffic sites
-social bookmarking (still looking for details on that one)
    -free classifieds like Craigslist

(i'm not including the paid ways since that would be another thread)

Any other ideas? Add to the list.

Ok, gotcha, no wonder I wasn't aware of that one. I've only heard of it here and there and have never been interested enough to bother checking it out.

I saw a webmaster selling his myspace account which had something like 3000 'friends'. Would that get good traffic to a site???

    Is Myspace worth the energy?

Just thought of another two for the list:
    - Submit to Digg
    - Create templates with your link on them

If you just want traffic so people might click on ads, probably. If you're selling something then it's not targeted enough so probably not worth it.

    Add:

    del.icio.us and fark.com

Bought links or from Links Exchanged.
Search Engines take time to send good traffic.
