SEO Newbie is Completely Lost

Hello, I'm helping an older guy with his blog, but the only problem is that when it comes to SEO, I'm just as clueless and stupid as he is. We've read various books and numerous websites, and while they all give general tips on SEO, there's gotta be something that we're missing because it can't be as easy as all the 'tips' make it sound.

Anyway, he wants "socrates" to be his keyword, and the website is: AskSocratesNow (dot) com. Where should we start in trying to get his site into the top 10 for "socrates"? And is this even a realistic goal? We've just started going to various blogs and forums around the net to get some backlinks posted, but is this worth the effort?

Thanks in advance, and I apologize if these sound like stupid questions.

Let's not debate your choice of keyword here, that's your choice and up to you but do make sure it has search demand. There's no pint in being number 1 on Google for a term that no one is looking for.

SEO really is relatively simple. properly built site, good titles and description, unique quality content and backlinks. Oh, and then, if you get all of that right a lot of patience. Good positions don't come overnight.

If you're using Wordpress get Platinum SEO or All in One SEO plugins.

u should focus on a variety of keywords to target including long tail ones that are easier than one keyword. ie socrates pet, socrates philosophy. then, u can get traffic from a variety of keywords. blogs are one of the easiest sites to promote. write interesting posts and ping it.

If you are new to SEO, then don't even try to rank for socrates, since it has over 10 million competing search results on Google. Also, even if you did miraculously rank for the term socrates, many people will probably be searching about information on socrates rather than a blog.
I would suggest that you rank for some long tail keywords rather than immediately aiming for such a high goal.

Hope this helps and if you need any tips feel free to pm me!

Make sure you have minimum five to ten pages on your website!
    Do some Link building.
