I'm interested in hearing thoughts on how to "appropriately" proceed with link building for a brand new site. Is it okay to go to a company like submitedge and purchase a "Gold SEO link building package" where they build many different kinds of backlinks over a couple months (blogs, directories, articles, etc.) or would that be too much too soon for a new site? Or would it be better to slow the pace way down and do a few directory submissions here and there along with a few articles here and there, etc? I'd appreciate your thoughts.....
I'd recommend doing it yourself, for like 1 hour (or maybe even half hour) a day for about 1 month, then stepping up as you go (you can hire someone to do it for you if you're too busy). But ask him to make sure he doesn't get you like 6000 links in 1-2 months. Unless you're website is a real buzz that attracts a lot of bloggers and news websites, that wouldn't be good for a site that is a few months old.
You should contact about 3 to 5 SEO companies to see what they offer. If you have $1000 to spend per month on your internet marketing budget, what are you going to get? No matter if you're building a new deck for your house or a website for your company, it's always good to get a couple bids before you proceed with any service. Don't forget to get references!

many SEO companies available. Check with some and get the their working startegy . Some of doing automatic process like using some tools for LB. Its dangerous cause penalization. Slecting one has to take more care
Make sure you have some decent content before starting to link build aggressively. I tend to understand that if you offer great unique content, you can step up your link building efforts at a faster rate.
Sometimes I don't trust companies and I prefer to do it on my own. If you have the time to spend, then set a daily task/routine going about things like forum posting, blog commenting, submission to social bookmarks and article directories. However, if you prefer to outsource, then check the reputation of the company and look for the best price + package.
Site have to be ready , some unique content , and not under-construction. Just submit search engines for day 1, and start build link from article ,RSS ,forums posting and directory submission on your own . If too fast boosting or increase backlinks un-natural way , your site index will be vulnerable to be taken down by google (sandbox). After a week or two , or even month can be done with more bulk of inlinks without taken down.

I would say if you have time do it your self or spend time to fight right Firm ,having site submitted to 3000 dirs and kinda stuff is not at all worth harsha

SE submission blog posting/commenting (remember to target high PR ones of your niche and don't spam.Make your comment worth and related to the topic.) Article writing and submission ( must be keyword rich and maximize your box for backlink) Forum posting (use sig) squidoo lens creation hub page press release minimal link exchange( dont overdo it) if you have a video use it submit it to tube sites and promote.
