It is true that backlinks can make nearly any site successfull, in fact many of my websites with almost no content are #1 from backlinks. However backlinks will not save you in a high competition keyword when the sites you are fighting against have amazing and unique content.
SEO is about learning the basics then filtering threw the bullshit, about half the things your hear are 100% bullshit. Takes a while to find out what works and does not.

Here are a few basics of SEO that will help a site rank for a given keyword: Relevant and Useful content – Search spiders do look at the content to judge how relevant it is to a search string Relevant Titles – A title of a page can help a page rank better, and a bad title can kill a pages rank Coding – Cumbersome coding will slow down a spider and often cause it to leave the site, cause less of the site to be indexed and indexing to happen less often Site Structure – A well laid out site will allow a spider to index the site faster and more efficiently allowing for more rapid indexing and more frequent indexing Internal Linking – Linking internally on a site can increase the rank of the individual pages if done correctly, if done poorly it can decrease the weight a search engine will put on that page. On Page Optimization – The strategic use of tags such as H1, H2, H3, B, STONG, ect… will indicate to a spider the main focus of the page and is factored into the algorithm highly. The list goes on and on. SEO is a large and broad subject, it is not just build a site and get as many links as possible. Google is far smarter than that!
for a new site, you should make backlinks to get your site indexed and your pr update. so you can insist on the other things.
This is it in a nutshell, you must have a site that is very search engine friendly. I am even finding that having relevant links is not what is cracked up to be either, doing a little experiment now with a domain that has many links to it from its previous life. Added a site to the domain that has nothing to do with the backlinks and it doing extremely well in the niche I switched it to. The domain had a site that was about entertainment, I put a site up with the domain about health, and it looks like it will be in the top ten for a hard search term soon already on page 2 in 1 month. Go figure.
yes I am agree with offpage optimization it is mandatory to do some onpage to get rank well. Even you can rank well by onpage optimization.
Everybody things that SEO is magic thing and SEO will generate traffic for your site very fast and instant but its completely false because another name of SEO is patience and hard work for your site with meaning full and legal.
