For english sites you can use wordtracker, but because I am dutch it won't work for me, because they do not give keyword suggestions in other languages. So what I do is just looking at my google analytics account and see on which keywords the visitors are coming to my websites. Especially when you have thousands of visitors each month, it can really help you to see which keywords your visitors see as most important.

You also have software like keywordelite from bryxensoftware. I have used this for a while, but it can be better, but the benefit is that you can select a country (so you own language).

So if you have an english website with not enough visitors to use analitics very well, then use wordtracker, but it cost money. When you have enough visitors you can use your analitics account to see on which words your visitors are searching for.

I use Google keyword tool as sachin410 and seoperson pointed out. However, this tool estimates how many clicks you will get if you start up an adwords campaign for said terms.

In order to find out how many clicks you will be getting with an organic listing, take the lowest estimated amount of clicks for a term and divide it by 0.08 (8% CTR). People say Google gives estimates based on a 2-3% CTR, however I have found the 8% to be much more reliable.

For example, say you want to see how many clicks you get with a #1-#3 organic ranking for the term 'coach handbags'. You'd first go to the AdWords Traffic Estimator and type in:

    [coach handbags]

The '[]' is used for exact terms (how many people are searching for just 'coach handbags'). Then, choose 'All Countries and Territories' and click Continue.

On the next page, you will see Google estimates you will get 148-186 clicks from people searching that term. Take the lower number of 148 and divide that by 0.08 and you will get 1,850. So the estimate (rough estimation!) of how many visitors you will is 1,850 per day for the term 'coach handbags' if you rank in the #1-#3 spot on Google.

I like my free keyword tool (of course I'm biased!):

    http://mattsfreekeywordtool.com

It pulls from wordtracker, but then also allows you to examine the competition for each keyword in google, yahoo, and msn. You can also export your results to a .csv file for later study.
