If a company is just getting around to doing SEO and PPC for their site, they shouldn't be in business anyway. They are 7 years behind their competitor that are.
I can't in good faith agree with that, catanich. Not because it denies SEO & SEM consultants a new client (which it does, when you think about it), but because that statement is nothing more than a defeatist attitude. Not only that, but there are also several ways to attack a search engine optimization and marketing campaign anyway. By starting an optimization campaign, a business owner will be able to learn more about his or her competitors (what and how they're doing in the search engines, what they're doing right, what they're doing wrong, and so on) so that an effective marketing strategy can be developed and implemented that will incorporate what they're doing right while also avoiding (and taking advantage of) the mistakes they're making in their own optimization and marketing campagins. After all, how many business web sites are nothing more than "brochure-ware" pages that offer nothing of value to their users anyway? SEO would be a great marketing tactic for a Web developer with search engine experience to use as a selling point to take that brochure-ware site and turn it into a critical component of that business.
