SEO in regards to IP addresses for websites

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by dkalweit, Nov 19, 2004.

Hello. I'm wondering what people currently believe to be the best wisdom on Google SEO as far as IP addresses go? I can purchase additional IP's from my ISP for relatively cheap, and confirmed that I can get them in seperate IP blocks(each block of 8, that is). Right now, I have some interlinking between my websites, and I'm wondering if putting these on seperate IP's may reverse the devaluation I hear happens when they're on the same IP? Any thoughts? Consensus? Thanks.

Are they really different IPs or do just the last 3 digits differ?

A different IP is a different IP. When I mentioned 'different blocks' as I said above, I guess I left out 'different class C blocks', which means they are in seperate class C networks where the 4th byte is not the only thing different('last 3 digits' to which you refer).

The only real answer is "No one outside of Google knows".

I'd say do it. Worst case, you've lost a few bucks for nothing. Best case, you've avoided a cross-linking penalty. I always like to follow the "just in case" theory.

I thought everyone here was in the hobby of running tests to prove/disprove their theories on SEO... :)

    So... the obvious question is...

How would you devise a test for this?

IMHO if you plan on having several websites. You need different IPs and they must be on a seperate C - Block or your links will receive less weight.

Even if your sites have different IP Class C addresses, there's still a possibility to detect affiliation among sites. Example: a group of interlinked sites that have exactly or almost exactly the same outgoing links (Logic: the author/webmaster is the same one (votes for the same sites)) :D
